Mallorca’s finest coves
Mallorca is paradise on earth. You’ll find the closest thing to happiness if you are visiting our magical island this year with its idyllic landscapes, in the shape of beautiful coves, with their fine sand, crystal-clear waters and cliffs watched over by ancient pines. So, if you are travelling to the Balearic Island this summer, we’ve got all the information you’ll need for days out in the sun. You can either take the car (or walk if it’s not too far) and discover why these are some of the best and most beautiful coves in Mallorca.
Cala Agulla (Cala Ratjada)
Description of the cove
If you are looking for a beach where you can be on your own and get away from it all, with no one else in sight and complete peace and quiet, this cove is perhaps not the best option. However, if what you seek is the opposite and you’ve travelled to Mallorca with a group of friends for an unforgettable holiday, you have to put this cove on your itinerary of the island’s best beaches and sandy spots. Its shallow waters also make it perfect for those travelling with children.
Access and transport:
The setting of this cove is nothing short of idyllic as it is surrounded by pines and mountains that shelter blue waters like nothing you have ever seen before. Understandably, Cala Agulla forms part of an Area of Special Interest (ANEI) and a Place of Community Interest (LIC).
If you’re lucky enough to be staying in one of the hotels in the area you can easily walk to this cove. If not, you can drive and park in the large paid car park that is located nearby. Leaving the car all day here will cost you no more than 5 euros (being one of the cheapest car parks on the island).
Sea conditions:
In terms of nature in its purest and wildest form, this cove will enchant you with its beautiful crystal-clear waters and their incomparable turquoise colour. There is also the charm of it being protected by trees and rocky areas.
The soft sand is heavenly to lie on and the calm shallow waters are ideal for children and for those who are a bit wary of the sea.
Facilities and Services:
Not only does it offer a stunning natural setting, Cala Agulla also has all manner of facilities which means you’ll find everything you need for your day out at the beach, such as sunbeds for hire, sunshades, a lifeguard service, beach bars, and so on.
Activities available:
You can relax on the sand and splash in the water or supplement your day out with other activities that are available in the surrounding area such as going for a hike from the cove. One of the routes is about 8 kilometres and takes you via Gulló, Cala Moltó, Cala Mesquida and the Son Jaumell watchtower. If you don’t feel like walking or if it’s just too hot in summer, you can always ride along the entire beach on horseback or do some sightseeing and visit the lovely village of Capdepera with its castle and fortress of the same name that dates from the fourteenth century.
Cala S’Amarador (Cap D’es Moro, Santanyí)
Description of the cove:
We are now heading into the area formed by the Mondragó Natural Park, in the south of island, where white sandy coves like this one are part of the region’s charm, along with cliffs, Mediterranean vegetation and waters that invite you to dive straight in. This cove is one of Mallorca’s best, with a long stretch of fine sand that awaits the whole family for a perfect summer day out.
Access and transport:
It is easy to reach this stunning cove by car and there is a car park nearby. From the car park it is just a pleasant 5-minute walk under the shade of the pine trees until you reach the beach and can touch the sand with your bare feet.
Sea conditions:
The good thing about this cove is that it is great for the whole family because as well as the fine sand which makes a visit even more pleasant if that were possible, the water gets deeper very gradually which gives older people and families with small children who are learning to swim more confidence and peace of mind. Its calm waters will support them as they take their first strokes in the water.
Facilities and services:
Although this cove is not one of the quietest and in summer especially it gets quite busy, you can have a drink at a small bar on the beach. There is no shower, however, at the beach and you’ll have to wait until you get back to your apartment or hotel for that refreshing shower after a day of sand and salt on your skin.
Activities available:
If you’re interested in discovering the marine flora and fauna that lie beneath the crystal-clear waters of this cove, this is the perfect place to do some snorkelling. Because it’s a beach with rocky walls you can see quite a lot of fish swimming by into the depths. Undoubtedly, this will be the finishing touch to a magical day at one of Mallorca’s best coves which you will not want to miss off your summer itinerary.
Cala Varques (Manacor)
Description of the cove:
It is true that of all the coves that there are in Mallorca, we have mentioned two that are often very busy in the morning and afternoon in July and August. However, we also offer the option of this enchanting area which is perfect if your idea of a good day at the beach is to not share a millimetre of sand with anyone. As with everything though, there will always be days in the summer where it seems as if everyone has had the same idea, and it fills up with people.
Access and transport:
Located on Mallorca’s east coast, this beautiful cove is not difficult to find or indeed access. However, you do have to walk for over half an hour to get to it (which means it is perhaps not the best option for those with small children). If you fancy a bit of luxury, you can arrive by boat for a day out at sea where you make stops along the coast. But if that is not a realistic option you can always reach Cala Varques on foot or, if you feel like doing some exercise, by bike.
Sea conditions:
Once you reach the beach stop for a moment and take in the view of the fine white sand next to the turquoise waters. These are some of the finest in Mallorca. Then don’t waste any more time and dive straight into the refreshing calm waters for a moment of peace and tranquillity, which you’ll find is exuded by this paradisiacal beach.
Facilities and services:
The bad thing about this cove is that it does not have any services or facilities so you will have to take everything you need yourself for a day on the beach, including your own food.
Activities available:
This unspoilt cove can boast of being one of the best in Mallorca with one of the largest underwater cave systems in Europe. This means it is the perfect spot for those who like diving and snorkelling. However, if you prefer to keep your feet on firmer ground, take a walk along the short path to Es Caló Blanc, where you can see a natural rock arch that will make the perfect photo of the area.
